Electric Japan 2022: Mayumi Hirata

Acclaimed photographer and documentary artist Mayumi Hirata presents two special photographic projects celebrating Japanese art and culture.

Jump! showcases Japanese artists and performers, designers, chefs and even monks – each captured jumping against a backdrop of identifiably classical European settings. Her images present “free spirits and movement” as well as “challenges in unfamiliar settings”, all with a dash of humour. 

We are also thrilled to present a compelling exhibition of her photographs capturing the work of multi-award winning traditional ‘irezumi’ tattoo artist, Horiren 1st. A range of extraordinarily intricate full and part-body artworks are captured through Hirata’s lens.
